SHEPHERDS OF THE SOUTH DOWNS — THEIR LIVES AND TIMES'

by Ian Everest

Central to Sussex farming in past centuries and to the economy of the area were the thousands of sheep that grazed on the Downs. The shepherds, who spent their solitary lives caring for their flocks, were a familiar part of the local countryside. Ian Everest will tell their story.

Ian was brought up on a farm on the South Downs. After attending Agricultural College in the late 1960s, he worked at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food before being employed by an animal feed supplement business.  Later he was appointed manager of Newhaven Fort, which he managed for 15 years, and was then Newhaven Town Clerk for ten years before retirement.

This meeting will be held at Ralli Hall (81 Denmark Villas, Hove, BN3 3TH).  Arrive from 2.00pm onwards for a 2.30pm start.
