Brunswick, West Hove and Portslade u3a

Events

These are the activities that members can attend in addition to the Special Interest Groups. They're a good opportunity to meet people from other groups and to learn about new things.

Monthly Meetings

Our Monthly Meetings are held on the third Wednesday afternoon of the month during the Autumn and Spring terms plus one meeting in the Summer Term and we encourage our members to attend regularly if they can. They are currently held at RALLI HALL, 81 Denmark Villas, Hove, BN3 3TH. This hall is disabled accessible, with disabled toilet and a hearing loop. Doors open at 2pm and members can then collect a tea/coffee from the hatch (no charge), sign up for educational visits and new groups, and socialise with other members before the formal meeting starts at 2.30pm.

There is then usually an illustrated talk by an invited speaker, an expert in his or her field. We arrange excellent speakers on a wide variety of interesting subjects. Sometimes we organise some other activity instead of a speaker. For example, in the past we have sometimes enjoyed afternoons of 'do-it-yourself' entertainment by our own members including poetry readings, stand-up comedy, music and more. Other examples include Quizzes, a Barn Dance, and a Games Afternoon, to name but a few.

Details of future speakers and topics or other activities are posted at the bottom of this page once arranged.

Science, Medicine & Technology: monthly Zoom meetings

A Zoom meeting, open to all members, on a topic under the heading 'Science, Medicine & Technology' (SMT) is held monthly with speakers who are all experts in their particular fields. The topics are often of particular interest to older people. Details are confirmed in the Chairman's monthly Mini Newsletters, together with a Zoom link. (Normally these meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month starting at 11am but this can sometimes change, depending on the availability of a particular speaker.)

Coffee Mornings

An open Coffee Morning is held monthly at One Bread Café at All Saints Church, The Drive, Hove, BN3 3QE, 10am - 12 noon. These informal get-togethers, normally on the first Wednesday of the month, provide an opportunity for our members to meet each other for a coffee and chat in an informal setting. The Café has a good selection of coffees, teas, cakes and pastries to purchase. These are drop-in sessions, so there is no need to join a group or to let anyone know if you are coming.

Educational Visits

We have an Educational Visit (outing) each term, again open to all our members, though numbers are usually limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis. The visits are normally to somewhere fairly local or in London. Past examples include private guided tours of the Regency Town House in Brunswick Square, De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, the Old Police Cells at Brighton Town Hall, 33 Palmeira Mansions at Palmeira Square, St Mary's Hall in Bramber, Brighton City Airport in Shoreham, Glyndebourne Opera House, and the Supreme Court in London. Dates for future visits will be posted at the bottom of this page once arranged.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM is held at the November Monthly Meeting. We always try to keep the formal part of the AGM as short as possible and to follow it with some kind of entertainment. For example, after the 2024 AGM we were entertained by a local women's choir and after the 2025 AGM a musical duo presented a selection of songs from the shows.

National u3a Events

There are also national events, including talks/lectures and summer schools, organised by the Third Age Trust, the national office for all u3as. These talks and lectures are held online using the Zoom platform. More information is on the national u3a website at: u3a - Home or click on the u3a tab in the menu bar across the top of this page.

Regional events

The South-East Region, a combined grouping of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex u3as, organises an annual Summer School at the University of Chichester, which all members of one of the South-East Region u3as can attend. See here:  2026 - South East u3a Forum

If you're not yet a member of our u3a, maybe we'll be able to welcome you as a new member for 2026/7 so that you can participate in events of this type. We have reduced membership fees for those joining for the first time after 1st January or after 1st May.
